Melinda Shank-Miles is a proud member of the Mattawa/North Bay Algonquin First Nation. Her paintings show the duality of the untamed wilderness, vibrant, organic colours, and the interference of man-made structures and the effects of pollution, violence and destruction. Melinda draws influence through history, culture and organic form, figures and texture. She is inspired by her Algonquin ancestry, a long-untold story of deep roots hidden in a modern world, and ancient bloodlines tied to the earth. Each canvas represents an illustrated story revealed to her in her personal exploration of origins. The result is a colourful series of images from Anishinaabe Algonquin history and culture, combining elements of traditional First Nations linework with the artist's own visual inperpretation of her inner journey.
